Ben M. Votroubek, 96, a longtime resident of Ely, died Thursday, February 9, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 13, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. William Harnish. Family will greet friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2006, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Irwin (Marlene) of Cedar Rapids, Vernon (Della) of Phoenix, Arizona, Lorraine (Norman) of Glendale, Missouri, Wanda (Jerry) Pisney of Swisher, and Nina (Howard) Knott of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Margaret Vornholt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Libbie; brothers, Rudolph, John, Frank, Henry and Charles; and a sister, Anna.
Ben was born August 27, 1909, the son of Joseph and Anna (Krcil) Votroubek, in East Amana, Iowa. On October 16, 1935, he was united in marriage to Libbie Vostrel, in Kahoka, Missouri. She died August 16, 1995. Ben farmed in the Johnson County area near the Iowa River for over 20 years. He also worked for Iowa Manufacturing Company, retiring in 1973. Ben was a member of the Friendship Club in Ely.
Ben was a special Dad, a devoted husband and a loving grandfather. He will be greatly missed by those who loved and knew him. Ben loved woodworking, enjoyed music and playing the harmonica and button accordion.
