Barbara M. Stepanek, 72, of Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, died there, Thursday, March 5, 2009, following a long illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Dennis Cahill. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a Vigil service will begin at 5:00 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, Johnie; her children, Susan (James) Wiberg of Appleton, Wisconsin, Jack (Jacque) Stepanek of Ankeny, Iowa, Joseph (Erin) Stepanek of Andover, Minnesota, and James (Peggy) Stepanek of Marion, Iowa; grandchildren, Jackson and Ellen Wiberg, Patience Stepanek, Abby, Sophey and Maxwell Stepanek, Hailey and Lauren Stepanek; and a half-sister, Polly (Mel) O’Donnell of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Jack and Charles Dunn.
Barbara was born December 12, 1936, the daughter of Elmer and Theresa (Bender) Dunn, in Parnell, Iowa. A graduate from Immaculate Conception High School in 1955, she was united in marriage to Johnie Stepanek at the Immaculate Conception Church, in Cedar Rapids on October 10, 1959. Barbara worked at the Killian’s Department Store in Cedar Rapids prior to her marriage. Barbara and John lived on the Stepanek farm until 1964, when they moved to Cedar Rapids. She worked again at the Killian’s Store Postal Sub Station until the store closed. Barbara then worked at Tele-Connect/MCI until the company closed her department. She went to work at T J Maxx store, retiring in 1997. Barbara was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Parish, where she was a member of the Resurrection Funeral Choir and the Main Choir of the church.
Barb was a loving wife and mother. She had a great appreciation for music and her Irish heritage.
