Barbara R. Palling, 81, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Silver Pines Assisted Living in Cedar Rapids. Private graveside services will be at a later date. Arrangement entrusted to Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cedar Rapids. Burial will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery in Pleasanton, Kansas.
Barbara was born on October 14, 1931, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of Robert Gibson & Grace Lee McWilliams Palling. She graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1949. She then studied at Kansas State College of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Kansas [B.A. in History], Denver University, Denver, Colorado [Masters in Library Science], and Texas Woman’s University [PhD in Philosophy]. Barbara was a high school librarian in Kansas, a cataloger and reference librarian in Missouri, and a library science instructor at Colorado University, Texas Woman’s University, and Delta State University in Mississippi. She was Director of the Ballou Library at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, before becoming Head of Reference at Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Missouri. Barbara retired to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she was a part-time Library Clerk at Kirkwood Community College.
Barbara was a member of the Daughters Of The American Revolution and a past member of The American Library Association. She enjoyed photography, crocheting, creative writing, especially children’s stories, and spending time with her friends and colleagues.
Barbara is survived by her many close friends. She was preceded in death by parents, Robert & Grace Palling.
