Barb was born July 12, 1940, the daughter of Chester and Laura (Brehn) Ettinger in Kansas City, Missouri. Her mother died shortly after her birth and was raised by her father and stepmother, Wanda Ettinger. On September 26, 1959, Barb was united in marriage to Robert LeRoy Brown at Faith United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. For the past nine years she worked in the cafeteria for the Vinton-Shellsburg School District. Prior to this she provided childcare in her home for over 30 years.

Barb enjoyed gardening, decorating, and was an avid Chicago Cub and Iowa Hawkeye fan, as she worked for Per-Mar Security taking tickets at Hawkeye games. Bob and Barb traveled around the area and the country in their sports cars and motorcycles. Spending time with her family and friends was very important, and her biggest joy was taking care of her "Bobby?.

A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Barb devoted her entire life to the care and nurturing of children. She was well known for the hugs and love she gave to the kids of Shellsburg. At Barb?s request, please no flowers. Instead memorials may be directed to the Hugs From Barb Fund at the Shellsburg Elementary School.
