Avis May Orend, 69, of Marion, Iowa, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 9, 2020, at her home. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 17, 2020, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on East Post Road in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.

Avis was born May 12, 1950, in Wattensaw, Arkansas, the daughter of Byron and Exie (Snow) Nelson. She attended school in Arkansas. Avis worked at St. Luke’s Hospital of Cedar Rapids for 15 years, Kitchen Experts, and most recently Tuesday Mornings. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Cedar Rapids, and she volunteered at the Temple. Avis was a strong, loving, dependable woman who was always there for her children and grandchildren. Avis loved them all unconditionally and was a mom to many.

Avis loved genealogy, music, camping, cooking and dancing. She enjoyed going and watching the trains. Avis always had a strong love for her roots in Arkansas and dreamed of moving back. She was a strong, loving, and dependable woman. Avis will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Avis is survived and lovingly remembered by her five daughters, Cassandra (Jeremy) Donn of Calackamas, Oregon, Cecilia Luke of Thorndike, Massachussetts, Candida (Marcus) Deree of Waterloo, Iowa, Cornelia Orend of Cedar Rapids, and Pam Hansen of Alburnett, Iowa; son, Robert (Kathleen ) Orend II of Riverside, California; 15 grandchildren, Erica, Alec, Libby, Anthony, Ryan, James, McKenzie, Zoe, Anastatia, Alasandra, Adriana, Lape, Emma, Henry, and Lane; two great-grandchildren, Exie Rose and Ezra; one sister, Ettie Noblitt of Villonia, Arkansas; one brother, Paul (Sharon) Nelson of Aurora, Oregon; and many nieces, nephews, and friends; former spouse, Robert Orend.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Ann Ashlin, June Lee, and Laura Nelson in infancy; three brothers, Clark Nelson, Byron Nelson, and Billie Nelson; and one grandson, Adam Ziehr.
