Dr. Austin J. Goldsmith, 27, of Grand Rapids, Michigan and formerly of Delhi, Iowa died Monday evening, December 6, 2004 in Grand Rapids, Michigan from head trauma resulting from a fall on November 12.
A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at St. John?s Catholic Church, Delhi with Rev. John Kremer presiding. Friends may call from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville with a Wake service beginning at 2:00 by Revs. Julie May and John Kremer. There will also be visitation one hour before Mass on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in St. John?s Catholic Cemetery in Delhi.
Austin was born the son of Jeffrey L. Goldsmith and Sheryl L. Schnittjer on July 23, 1977 in Manchester. He was valedictorian of the Maquoketa Valley High School Class of 1995. In 1999, Austin earned his BS in Pre-Medicine, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. He then attended the University of Iowa College of Medicine, graduating in 2003. Austin was currently a second-year surgical resident at Spectrum Health for Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center for Health Professions.
Austin enjoyed watching and participating in sporting events and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was active in music, speech and drama throughout high school and college. Austin enjoyed spending time with his many friends.
Austin is survived by his parents, Jeff (Pam) Goldsmith and Sheryl Schnittjer (Dave Sands), all of Delhi; a sister, Jenna Goldsmith of Delhi; grandparents, Leo "Duff? Goldsmith of Earlville, Dave & Judy Schnittjer of Manchester, Edith Schnittjer (Gary Knudsen) of West Concord, MN; a great-grandmother, Hazel Schnittjer of Delhi; and his girlfriend, Katie Reif of Westchester, IL.
Austin was preceded in death by his grandmother, Doris Goldsmith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Maquoketa Valley Dollars for Scholars to establish an endowment scholarship in Austin?s name.
