Arthur Charles Kouba, 88, of rural Center Point, died Saturday, January 18, 2003, in St. Luke?s Hospital, following a brief illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, by the Rev. Mike Ellson. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 20, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Arlene; three daughters, Nancy Brendel and husband Jon of Center Point, Susan Hutchinson and husband Tom of Hudson, Ohio, and Marlyn Crook and husband Henry of Los Gatos, California; a son, Dr. James Kouba and wife Lesle of Bloomfield, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Alma Kress of Rowley, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Lillian Kouba of Center Point; and his brother, Lumir Kouba of Mountain View, California.

Arthur was born June 13, 1914, the son of Joseph and Katherine Chihak Kouba, on his family farm northeast of Center Point, Iowa. From 1934-1935, he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps, helping to build Backbone State Park in northeast Iowa. On June 12, 1943, Arthur was united in marriage to Arlene Zabokrtsy in Center Point. He was a lifetime farmer and remained active as a CCC Backbone Reunion member. Arthur served on the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Joint County School Board and later the Area 10 School Board. He is recognized at the nation?s capital for his contribution as one of the six founders of Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the Center Point United Methodist Church in memory of Arthur.
