Arthur H. Gemmer, 51, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully on February 24, 2008, in his home. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Art’s life will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his daughter, Melissa Gemmer of Terre Haute, Indiana; his mother, Janet (Mike) Cassimatis, of York, Pennsylvania; two brothers, Greg (Lynn) Gemmer of Cedar Rapids and Baron (Lydia) Gemmer of Wayne, Pennsylvania; a sister, Gretchen (Robert) Schuster of Naples, Florida; and Melissa’s mother, Kathy Gemmer of Terre Haute, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur.
Art was born April 3, 1956, the son of Arthur and Janet (Bergdoll) Gemmer, in Indianapolis, Indiana. A 1978 graduate from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, he began working for Rockwell Collins. Art worked there for 27 years, first in software development and as a manager in the HF product group and then in the process training group teaching risk management, his area of expertise. In 2006, he started his own consulting firm, The Art of Risk. He had numerous published articles including the coauthored "Profiting from Risk: A Transformation of One Company's Risk Culture" detailing the transformation of Rockwell Collins in this area.
Art loved to play volleyball and coached girls volleyball at Prairie High School for several years. An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed biking, traveling extensively for work and pleasure, and collecting artifacts from his travels. Art was a very outgoing person who had a witty sense of humor, loved animals, and loved helping people.
