Arnold L. Swalley, 73, of 2724 28th Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following heart failure. Services: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Tom Pietz of the First Lutheran Church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2004, at the funeral home and one hour prior to service on Saturday.

Survivors include his children, Sheila (Bob) Ford of Phoenix, Arizona, Wendy Carpenter, Roger (Ramona) Swalley and Mark Swalley, all of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his fiancé, Wilma Johnson of Cedar Rapids; many nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Lucille Swalley of Cedar Rapids and Julie Goodall of Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven; six brothers, Richard, Vernon, Leland, Ed, Bob and Dale; and two sisters, Audrey and Dorothy.

Arnold was born December 8, 1930, the son of Edward and Gladys Johnson Swalley, in Iowa City, Iowa. He served with the United States Army. On January 6, 1953, he married Audrey Aimers. They later divorced in 1999. Arnold worked for Harper-McIntyre, was a butcher for Wilson Foods for 17 years and then did odd jobs. He enjoyed gardening and yard work, bingo, cold coffee, fishing and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Arnold was a loving father and friend.

Instead of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in memory of Arnold.
