Arnold D. Sobolik, 87, a resident of Garnett Place Retirement Center, died there, Friday, July 28, 2006, following a long illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2006, at St. Ludmilas Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas McDermott. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 31, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a scripture wake will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:30 until service time Tuesday at the church. Burial: St. John?s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include two daughters, Claudia Havlicek of Cedar Rapids and Deborah Koskela and son-in-law, John of Robins; four granddaughters, Melissa Bjornsen of Hiawatha, Jennifer Kulas of Orlando, Florida, Andrea Schminkey and Julie Bunten, both of Cedar Rapids; and six great-grandchildren Shana Schminkey, Cody Schminkey, Ashley Bunten and Derek Bunten, all of Cedar Rapids, Nicholas Bjornsen and Benjamin Bjornsen, both of Hiawatha.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; a son-in-law, Steve Havlicek; and his beloved wife of 60 years, Adeline.
Arnold was born July 16, 1919, the son of James and Elizabeth Sobolik in Calmar, Iowa. On August 29, 1940, he was united in marriage to Adeline Wilhelm. Arnold worked at Quaker Oats for 40 years. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and loved working in his yard.
