Arlie Lee Rhodes, 96, a resident of Arbor Place in Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, July 15, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital, following a prolonged illness. Services will be held 10:30AM, Monday, July 19, 2004 at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Central City by Rev. Wayne Droessler. The visitation will be held Monday from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. at the Murdoch funeral home in Central City. Internment will occur 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Florida Hills Memorial Gardens in Brooksville, Florida with military rites.

Arlie was born June 16, 1908, the son of Miles Herbert and Melissa Jane (Cobb) Rhodes, in Higby, West Virginia. He spent his younger years in rural West Virginia and worked in Charleston until he enlisted in the Navy. He served as Ship Cook 1st Class in the US Navy Reserve from January 1942 until October 1945. He toured in the South Pacific on the USAT Sea Witch, in the 91st US Naval Construction Battalion in New Guinea, and ABCD Navy.

On March 2, 1946, he married Helen Andrews in Chicago, Illinois. Arlie worked at Hotpoint as an inspector and owned the Hinsdale Ice Company. He and his wife retired to Spring Hill, Florida. He enjoyed gardening (Florida Master Gardener), hunting, fishing and bowling. He lived 34 years in West Virginia, 30 years in Illinois and 25 years in Spring Hill Florida. Arlie moved to Iowa in 2000, to be near family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on August 19, 1995; five sisters, Lura, Lucy, Goldie, Pearl and Luda; and two brothers, Lester and Lemma.

Survivors include his daughter, Joyce Mertens and husband William of Central City, IA; four grandchildren, Debra Luzier and husband James of Norwalk, IA; William C. Mertens of Ankeny, IA; Michelle Mertens-Dodgen and husband Neil of West Branch, IA; and James M. Mertens and wife Hollis of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; four great-grandchildren, Katherine & Margaret Luzier, Joe Dodgen and August Mertens; brother-in-law, Curtis Raines of Orlando, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials will be made in Arlie's name.
