Arlene I. Anthony, 76, of 500 Freeseway Dr., Robins, was taken home to Christ on Saturday, January 11, 2003, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha, by the Rev. Daniel Krueger. Friends may call at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, from 4 - 7 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 14) and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, Tony; a son, Steven of Hiawatha; a daughter, Susan Goeman of Altoona, Iowa; three sisters, Eleanor Sirvid and husband Stanley of Clinton, Alice Waterman and husband Leonard of Waterloo and Maxine Hunter of Glendale, Arizona; a grandson, Brandon Goeman of Kansas City, Missouri; and a sister-in-law, LaFonda Watson of Oelwein.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George Watson.
Arlene was born the daughter of David and Edith Watson on September 9, 1926, in Oelwein, Iowa. On March 7, 1948, she was married to Tony Anthony in Vinton. Arlene was a 55-year member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha and a lifetime member of the Lutheran Women?s Mission League of Zion. She held various offices and had also served as past treasurer of the League. In 1985, she was chosen L.W.M.L. Woman of the Year. Arlene made quilts for the Lutheran World Relief for thirty years. She also was a member of the Lutheran Women?s Bible Study group at Zion. Arlene was an active volunteer at the Veterans Medical Center in Iowa City and was recognized there as Woman of the Year. For twenty-nine years, Arlene was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 298 of Marion, serving as treasurer for fifteen years.
