Archie W. Cooey, 77, of Delhi, Iowa, died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood, after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6, 2004, at the Delhi United Methodist Church, Delhi, Iowa, with Rev. Julie May officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, Iowa, and for one hour before services on Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Delhi.
Archie was born on June 2, 1926 at the Trippler General Hospital in Honolulu, HI, the only child of 1st Lt. Archie W. Cooey, Sr. and Verlie (Mann) Cooey. His father was transferred back to the States in 1928. Except for their time spent in Panama, they lived on Army bases in the east until his father?s retirement in 1933. The family then moved to the Texas Rio Grand Valley. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and finished his two-year service as an Armorar with the 406 Fighter Group, 9th Air Force. Archie graduated from Texas Southmost College in Brownsville, TX and attended Baylor University at Waco. On August 24, 1949, Archie was united in marriage to Marcheta R. Furman at the Delhi United Methodist Church in Delhi. He worked for Pan American Air Ways until 1956, when they moved back to Old Hartwick (near Delhi) to build and operate Hartwick Lake Marina until 1985.
Archie was a member of the Delhi United Methodist Church, the Delhi American Legion Post #160 and was a charter member of the Delhi Lions Club. He volunteered with the Senior Meals on Wheels Program and served as Chairman of the Delaware County Senior Citizens, Inc. board for many years. Archie acted as Scout Master, District Commissioner and served as a committee member of the Boy Scout Troop #44 until his death. He was an Eagle Scout, Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and he received the Silver Beaver Award. He was an avid bowler and golfed as a favorite pastime during retirement. Archie enjoyed planting trees and flowers, holiday decorating and building model airplanes, ships and railroad layouts.
Archie is survived by his wife Marcheta R. Cooey of Delhi; three children and their spouses, William T. (Barbara) Cooey of Dubuque, Ralph D. (Donna) Cooey of Longmont, CO, Deborah P. Cooey (Tracy) Knake of Delhi; ten grandchildren, James T. (Linda) Pingel, Joseph M. Cooey, Justin W. Thole, Kamin L. Loney, Ryan W. Cooey, Candace C. Jorgensen, Tyler D. Cooey, Breana D. Cooey, Miranda M. Knake, Austin R. Knake; and three great-grandchildren, Cassidy J. Jorgensen, Justine R. Jorgensen and Aubrey K. Cooey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie W. Cooey Sr. and Verlie B. Cooey; and two great-grandchildren.
