Anthony "Tony? H. Funke, 93, formerly of Ryan, died Saturday morning, October 5, 2002, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood, after a short illness.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am, on Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Ryan, with Rev. Msgr. Richard P. Funke and Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in rural Ryan.
Tony was born on May 30, 1909, in Dyersville, Iowa, son of Frank & Augusta (Recker) Funke. Tony received his education and graduated from Dyersville High School in 1924. He attended Loras College in Dubuque studying engineering. After his father passed away, Tony returned home to operate the family farm. On May 30, 1933, Tony was united in marriage to Margaret Ludwig, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Farley. The couple lived and farmed in the Dyersville and Earlville areas. They moved to Ryan area in 1943, where they farmed until retiring and moving to town in 1979. Margaret passed away on January 9, 2000.
Tony was a member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, of Ryan, where he served on numerous boards, both church and civic. He was a member of the Catholic Order Foresters and the Knight of Columbus. In his social time he loved to play cards and listen to music.
Tony will be missed by his six children, Rev. Msgr. Richard P. Funke of Dubuque, Marjean (Merlyn) Havertape of Manchester, Lloyd J. (Constance J.) Funke of Manchester, Thomas L. (Rose Mary) Funke of Manchester, Robert A. (Rosalie N.) Funke of Bishop Hill, Illinois, and Barbara A. (Steven J.) Hackbarth of Manchester; twenty grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Augusta Funke; his wife, Margaret B. Funke; two grandchildren, Michaela Ann Havertape and Richard Anthony Funke; four sisters; and five brothers.
