Anna A. Smejkal
December 23, 1910 — November 3, 2004
Anna A. Smejkal, 93, of southeast Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2004, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Msgr. Karl Glovik and Deacon Bill Cisler. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial: St. John?s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her sons, Alan (Mary Lou) Smejkal, Leonard (Carol) Smejkal, Gary (Linda) Smejkal, all of Cedar Rapids, and Bernard (Gretchen Klayman) Smejkal of Merritt Island, Florida; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; three stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, John Lesler.
Anna was born December 23, 1910, the daughter of John and Anna Sirovy Lesler, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On September 6, 1930, she was united in marriage to Leonard Smejkal, Sr. in Iowa City, Iowa. He died March 1, 1976. For 35 years, Anna worked at McKinley School as a cook, retiring in the fall of 1976. After retiring, she worked at Ruzicka?s Locker in Solon for many years and was a very special caregiver to Matthew Ruzicka.
Anna was a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, St. Bridget?s Circle, Sanctuary Guild, Legion of Mary, Rosary Society and Jane Boyd Community House. She loved to crochet, making over 100 afghans this last year, play cards, baking and was an avid bingo player. Anna will be remembered for her beautiful crocheted gifts of doilies and table cloths, her Hoska?s at Christmas and her sparkling personality and smile.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Anna.
