Amy P. Anderson-Severa nee Colberg, 85, died January 15, 2014, at her home at the Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids. Graveside services will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at the Pecatonica Cemetery, Pecatonica, Illinois. Arrangements with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Amy was born May 31, 1928, the daughter of Claude & Beda Colberg of Pecatonica, IL. She graduated top-of-her-class with honors from Pec High School. She matriculated at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA, where she had the distinction of serving as President of her Alpha Xi Delta sorority both her junior and senior years, graduating in 1950, and was affiliated with Dorian Voorhees Council, Acorn yearbook, YWCA 1st Cabinet, Pi Gamma Mu, Chi Delta, Pan-Hellenic Council, Who's Who, Woman's Athletic Assn, Associated Women Students, and Sweetheart of Lambda Chi. After graduation, Amy returned to Rockford where she worked for Bill Haahn and the YWCA where she met Earl Stuffle. They married in 1954, divorced 1971. Their son was born in 1961.
While living in Crystal Lake, IL, Amy was asked to become a teacher at Westwood elementary school because they were short of teachers. She never thought she would want to teach, but after being asked three times, she gave in and found she loved teaching. She loved it so much that she taught fifth and sixth grades for more than 34 years in three school districts. Her tenure being with Harlem Schools D122 in Illinois.
While teaching, she matriculated at Rockford College earning a remedial Reading Masters in 1982. She taught remedial reading classes at Rockford College several summers after earning her Masters. In 2000, she returned to Cedar Rapids for the 50th anniversary of her graduating class, and met William Severa, who was in her class, but their paths had never crossed. Lo and behold, on April 21st, 2001, Amy and Bill were married in the Poe Chapel at Coe College and have made their home in Cedar Rapids since.
Amy is survived by her husband, Bill Severa; her son, Rodney Stuffle; her step-children, Margery (Keith) Haworth of West Branch, IA and Richard Severa of Richmond, TX; step-grandson, William B. Severa; and other extended family. She is also survived by her former husband, Earl Stuffle.
Amy was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family may be given to the family to be used in Amy's name for the Pecatonica, IL, BSA Troop #1, pecscouting.org
