Ambrose F. Dolan, 95, of Grand Island, died Sunday September 16, 2007, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be Wednesday, September 19, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Francis T. Curran will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 ?" 7 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a Scripture Wake service at 7:00 p.m. Additional services will be Friday, September 21, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan, Iowa. The Rev John R. Flaherty & Rev. Bob Davies will concelebrate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Ryan, Iowa with military honors. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 ?" 7 p.m. at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home with at Scripture Wake service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Ambrose F. Dolan was born May 4, 1912, at Charlotte, IA, to Oswald and Cecile (Martin) Dolan.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Grand Island, NE.

45 grand children, and 15 great-grandchildren ?" all blessings.

Cecile and Jim Salz of Mesa, AZ; and many cousins.

He finished high school at Ryan, IA, and attended Loras College in Dubuque, IA, and the Dominican House of Studies in River Forest, IL, where he received a masters degree. During World War II, he spent 3½ years as a classification specialist at Second Air Force bases in Salt Lake City, UT, and Lincoln, NE.

On November 18, 1946, he married Margaret Mary “Marty” McEnany at Coggon, IA. In 1946, he joined the sales force of Studebaker in South Bend, IN. They lived in South Bend, IN; Cincinnati, OH; Nashville, TN; Cedar Falls, IA; and Des Moines, IA. In 1961, his job with American Motors brought them to Grand Island. He took an early retirement in 1973 and joined Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, working as an agent for the next 25 years and enjoying helping people.

In 1956, he was fortunate to find a listing of 12 in his great-grandfather’s family who emigrated from County Mayo, Ireland, to Clinton County, Iowa, about 1850. Traveling Iowa and Nebraska, he enjoyed contacting cousins and composing genealogy lists of Dolan and Martin relatives, including roots in Ireland and Belgium.

After 40 beautiful years, Marty died of cancer January 26, 1986, and was buried with their families in Calvary Cemetery at Ryan, IA. On May 23, 1987, he married Evelyn Anderson whose ten children had graduated with the Dolan four from Central Catholic High School, which they both supported and were awarded membership in the Central Catholic Hall of Fame in 2001. They were trustees of the Diocese, active members of Blessed Sacrament Church, and daily communicants. Ambrose was a member of the Knights of Columbus, including Past Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree, a member of the Dominican Laity, a member of the American Legion, and a volunteer with the St. Francis Hospice.

Four brothers preceded him in death: Mike, Clair, Toby, and Leo; and a sister, Regina Slattery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Grand Island Central Catholic Middle/High School, the St. Francis Medical Center Foundation, and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
