Alvena C. Lafler
February 27, 1913 — February 17, 2004
Alvena C. Lafler, 90, a resident of the Hiawatha Care Center, died Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at the care center, following a short illness. Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Fritz Mellberg. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery.
Survivors include her sister, Margaret Willard and husband Howard of Cedar Rapids; her very dear friends, Bill and Mary Bennett of Hiawatha; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and four brothers, Gerald, Harold, Bob and John.
Alvena was born February 27, 1913, the daughter of Henry James and Rettie May (Rice) Scherbaum in Decatur, Illinois. On August 10, 1958, she married John Edward Lafler in Vinton. He died April 8, 1981. Alvena was an avid gardener and loved being outdoors. She especially enjoyed traveling to see family members.
