Alva R. “Ab” Fortner, 69, of Marion, entered into rest Friday, September 5, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a long illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Bill Holley of Eastview Christian Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. ?" 1:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial: Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Lola of Marion; four children, Janet (Jim) Davis of Marion, Robert (Patty) Fortner of Marion, Jimmie (Susan) Fortner of Cedar Rapids, and Bonnie (Brad) Lass of Mt. Vernon; and grandchildren, Michelle, Joshua, Caleb, and Rachel Davis, Trisha, Garrett, and Katie Fortner, Blake and Tyler Fortner, and Dillon and Jamie Lass.
Also surviving are two brothers, George (Jo) Fortner of Greeneville, Tennessee, and Boyd (Charlene) Fortner of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Roxie Barron of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harlen, Farlie, and Jack Fortner; two sisters, Helen Phelps and Judy Fortner; and a granddaughter, Angel Lass.
Alva was born July 27, 1939, the son of Connel and Bonnie (Williams) Fortner in Greeneville, Tennessee. On June 11, 1961, he married Lola Mae Spurgeon in Marion, Iowa. He worked as a foreman for the City of Marion Parks for thirty-one years, retiring in 2001.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Ab’s memory.
