Aloysius “Al” Geers, 83, of Marion, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018, at the Ed & Joan Hemphill Hospice Unit at St. Luke’s Hospital. Parish Vigil Service: 3:30 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. The family will greet friends and family following the service from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Marion. The family will also greet friends and family one hour prior to Mass at the church. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Al was born on June 19, 1935, in Petersburg, Iowa, to Gerhard and Frieda (Henkels) Geers. He married Mary Ann Hoefler on January 31, 1956, in New Vienna, Iowa. She passed away April 20, 2018. Al began his career in the United States Army as a fireman stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. After returning to Iowa, he began farming in Dubuque County. Al then became a tractor mechanic. The family moved to Cedar Rapids in 1963 where he was a heavy equipment mechanic and later became an operating engineer on various heavy equipment. His favorite machine was a finishing “dozer.” Al was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Wandering Wheels Camping Club. He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating and being outdoors. What Al loved most was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Al is survived by his children, Robert (Stephanie) Geers of Cedar Rapids, Roger (Judy) Geers of Urbana, Ohio, Donna (Dan) Wolf of Plano, Texas, Dianne (Tim) Moyer of Coggon, and Randy (Kelly) Geers of Northglenn, Colorado; 12 grandchildren, Kristin (Eric) Stakland, Elizabeth Kaiser, Jacob (Erica) Geers, Cory (Katie) Geers, Brian (Hallie) Moyer, Luke (Dominique) Geers, Laura Geers, Chelsie Geers, Quinn Wolf, Joel Geers, Kyle Wolf and Ian (Lauren) Ortiz; 18 great-grandchildren; siblings, Rosie Klien, Ed Geers, Bud (Cindy) Geers, Fritz (Mary) Geers, Bill (Ginny) Geers, Gertie (Ralph) Hunt, Steve (Lila) Geers, Chuck (Vickie) Geers, Clara (Jack) Cole; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sharon (Merle) Wiskus, Pat Geers, Germain Schilling, John Hoefler, Clarence “Clem” (Joan) Hoefler, Eileen (Jim) Simon and Dave (Joyce) Hoefler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann; and five brothers, Rudy, Joe, Jim, John and Jerry.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Al’s memory.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Winslow House Care Center and Ed & Joan Hemphill Hospice Unit at St. Luke’s Hospital for the professional and compassionate care they provided to Al.
