Alma Susan Banowetz, 82, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, after a lingering illness. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 4, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Visitation will be from 3 ?" 7 p.m., Sunday, May 3, 2009 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion where a scripture service will begin at 6:00 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Maquoketa.
Alma was born in Jackson County, Iowa, on May 5, 1926, to John A. and Mary (Jacobs) Kloft. On September 26, 1944, she married Vincent J. Banowetz at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Springbrook, Iowa. They had two sons, Gary and Bernard. Vincent died in 1950, in Maquoketa. On June 5, 1954, she married Raymond A. Banowetz at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids. They have a son, Thomas.
Alma worked in nursing homes in Tipton and Marion. She volunteered at Aging Services and RSVP. She enjoyed gambling and playing cards, loved her family, and always enjoyed the little folks. She was a member of St. Theresa’s Circle in Marion.
She is survived by her husband, Ray; three sons, Gary (Sandie) of Corvallis, Oregon, Bernard (Julie) of Oak Run, California, Tom (Cindy) of Marion; grandchildren, Aaron (Elizabeth), Matt (Sarah), Sarah, Daniel, Katie Jo; a sister, Vera (Norbert) Banowetz; a brother, Donald (Ann) Kloft; and four great-grandchildren, Joseph, Jonathon, Abigail, and Rebecca.
She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Rosina Kloft Kieffer and Evelyn Kloft Medinger; two brothers, Clarence and Allen Kloft; and a grandson, Andrew Banowetz.
