Alma A. Balderston, 97, formerly of Alburnett and Marion, died at Rockridge Care Center in Shellsburg, Saturday, April 18, 2009. Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion. Missionary Pastor Bob Taber will officiate at the Celebration of Life service. The family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial: Jordan’s Grove Cemetery in Central City.
She is survived by her children, Claire Philip (Joyce) Balderston of Lakeville, Ohio, Randy (Karen) Balderston of Alburnett; one brother, Melvin Machacek (Bonnie) of Winthrop; five grandchildren, Eric Balderston of San Francisco, Beth Balderston of Seattle, Kimberly Balderston of Cedar Rapids, Kristie (Matt) Pealer of Olathe, Kansas, Aaron (Dawn) Balderston of Alburnett, and their children, Jordan, Breanne, and Mason.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ken; one son, Keith; one grandson, Ryan; five sisters; and three brothers.
Alma was born April 30, 1911, in Ely, Iowa, the daughter of Vaclav and Pauline (Novak) Machacek. She was a 1928 graduate of Alburnett High School. Alma married Kenneth Balderston on September 24, 1931, in Alburnett. He died December 12, 1999. She and Ken farmed for many years in the Alburnett area before retiring to Marion in 1974. Alma took great pride in serving her community and church. She will also be remembered as a fabulous kolache baker.
A memorial fund has been established in Alma’s name.
