Neale graduated from Franklin High School in 1939. As a young man he answered the Nation’s call and joined the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War II. He served in England and Europe. During the months of December 1944 through January 1945, he stood a post on the Battle of the Bulge, which was the last major battle of the war in Europe. In 1945, he walked into Siebke Taylor Jewelry Store on 2nd Avenue in downtown Cedar Rapids to buy a watch and was waited on by a young clerk named Annabell Harger. They married on February 9, 1946. They would live out their lives together until Ann’s death 67 years later. Except for four years in Texas, they lived their entire married life in Cedar Rapids. Neale and Ann were members of the Cedar Rapids Christian Church. Neale retired as a supervisor from Quaker Oats in 1987.
