Allen "Buzz" L. Hand

Allen L. "Buzz? Hand, 57, of 1233 A?Hearn Drive NE, Cedar Rapids, died Monday, January 12, 2004, in Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, as a result of an automobile accident. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2004, at First Assembly of God Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Rick Gail. Friends may call at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion from 4 - 8 p.m. Friday (Jan. 16.) Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of twenty-one years, Pam; his parents, Philip and Berniece Hand of Center Point; his father-in-law, Corwin Abernathy of Scarborough, Maine; three sisters, Phyllis (Kenny) Jones of Center Point, Betty (Larry) McBurney of Toddville and Rosie (Mitch) Robinson of Cedar Falls; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clarence and Olive Hand and Emmet and Rose Shaffer; his mother-in-law, Kathy Abernathy; his brother-in-law, David; and a niece, Emily Krsek.
Allen L. Hand was born September 18, 1946, the son of Philip and Berniece Shaffer Hand in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Center Point High School in 1965. On August 28, 1982, he was united in marriage to Pamela Sue Abernathy at the Hand farm in rural Center Point. Buzz was a stock clerk at Evergreen Packaging Equipment in Cedar Rapids for thirty years. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
He was very proud to have been an Olympic torchbearer when it traveled through Cedar Rapids in 1996. Buzz took part in the Buzz Hand Open Golf Outing for twenty-five years. He was a very active volunteer in the community, often championing the cause of persons with disabilities.
A memorial fund has been established for Waypoint Services for Women, Children and Families in memory of Buzz.
