Allen (Al) L. Nielsen, 57, of Central City, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital due to kidney cancer. Memorial Services: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Jordan’s Grove Baptist Church in rural Central City by Rev. Steve Russell and Rev. Harmon Webb. Al’s final resting place will be at the Jordan’s Grove Cemetery. Arrangements by: Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City.
Survivors include his mother, Wanda (Bert) McNitt of Vinton; father, George Nielsen of Central City; siblings, Richard (Barbara) Nielsen of Muscatine, Randall (Judy) Nielsen of Brandon, Karleen (Carl) Gray of Vinton, Phil (Lora) Nielsen of Central City; eleven nieces and nephews; eleven great-nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jennifer Cook of Missouri.
Al was born March 5, 1952, to George H. and Wanda L. (Thordsen) Nielsen in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Independence High School in 1970, and then graduated from Northeast Iowa Technical College in Calmer. He went on to work for Spahn and Rose, Bandag, and Transport America. Al was a member of the Linn County Fair Board, was active with the Kid’s Day Program, NEISCA, Vinton Lion’s Club, Central City Equine Association, APHA, and AQHA.
Al was a devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan and especially enjoyed their wrestling program. He also was a faithful fan of the Central City Wildcats. He was a loving uncle who regularly attended his nieces’ and nephews’ events. Al was a man who loved his family and friends very much, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
