Alice A. (Vorwald) Oberbroeckling, 88, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Coggon, Iowa, passed away peacefully with her husband at her side on Monday, June 3, 2024, as a result of a stroke caused by a blood clot at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, where a parish vigil service will begin at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, located at 211 3rd Street N., in Coggon, where an additional visitation will be held for one hour prior to the Mass. The Reverend Sean Smith will officiate. Committal services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, at Boniface Cemetery in New Vienna, Iowa.

Alice was born on August 1, 1935, in New Vienna, the daughter of George W. and Clara C. (Klostermann) Vorwald. She was a 1953 graduate of St. Boniface High School in New Vienna. Alice received her Nursing License from Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa. On August 8, 1959, Alice was united in marriage to James “Jim” Joseph Oberbroeckling at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna. They lived in Troy Mills, Iowa, until they moved to Coggon in 1968, where they raised their three sons. Alice was employed with North Linn Community School as the School Nurse for nearly 30 years, until her retirement in 1997. She and Jim moved to HallMar Village in Marion, in September of 2023. Alice enjoyed reading, golfing with Jim, playing cards, especially ‘Bridge’ and ‘500’, and watching the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams, especially during the Caitlin Clark years. She also enjoyed traveling with Jim; they had traveled to all 50 states and even 26 foreign countries. Alice will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Alice is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband Jim of nearly 65 years; three sons, Tom (Kathy) Oberbroeckling of Shawnee, Kansas, Terry (Lucy) Oberbroeckling of Inverness, Illinois, and Mark (Maren) Oberbroeckling of Glenview, Illinois; ten grandchildren, Max, Sam, and Jack Oberbroeckling, Lauren, Lindsay, Tyler, and Paige Oberbroeckling, and Carter, Noah, and Riley Oberbroeckling; nephew, Kevin Vorwald; and two sisters-in-law, Eileen Donovan and Judy Oberbroeckling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ken (Bernice) Vorwald; three half-brothers, Art (Lucy) Heying, Louis (Loretta) Heying, and Walter (Lou) Heying; half-sister, Bernice (Tom) Reagan, niece, Diane Ruden; and two brothers-in-law, Jack (Iva) Oberbroeckling and Dan Oberbroeckling.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Alice’s memory may be directed to either St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Coggon or St. Boniface Cemetery in New Vienna.
