Alice Louise Houmes, 89, a resident of Promise House, Hiawatha, formerly of Central City, died Friday, March 21, 2008, following a long illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008, at United Church of Christ in Central City by Rev. Jonna Jensen. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy (Tim) Stage of Dike, Cleda Houmes of Salinas, California, and Allison Larson of Algona; a son, Blaine (Nancy Pfutzenreuter) Houmes of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Alvena Miller; and her husband, Richard.
Alice was born May 29, 1918, the daughter of Wiley and Rose (Bednashek) Kubec in Cedar Rapids. She married Dr. Richard L. Houmes in Cedar Rapids on December 26, 1949. He died March 25, 1959. Alice was a graduate of Washington High School and completed two years of business school in Cedar Rapids. She worked as a secretary at National Oats Company and subsequently was a bookkeeper at Farmer’s Cooperative Exchange in Central City.
Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice in Alice’s memory.
