Dr. Alfred Brendel, 96, a resident of Methwick Community, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Central City, died Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2012, at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, by Rev. Brenda Ehret. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2012, at the funeral home. Inurnment: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City, at a later date.

Survivors include his children, Chris Brendel of Minneapolis, MN, Nancy (Richard) Meggers of Roscoe, IL, Jon (Nancy) Brendel of Center Point, IA, and Peter (Celesta) Brendel of Tiffin, IA; six grandchildren, Amy Brendel M.D., Ian Brendel, Megan Arnold, Julian Brendel, Sara Carey, and Molly Lilja; and four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Johannes, Liam, and Kolbjorn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; and two sisters, Helga Tietz, and Margaret Jensen.

Alfred was born August 31, 1916, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Emil and Nancy (Izer) Brendel. He graduated from Grant High School, Cedar Rapids, with the Class of 1934. Alfred attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids for his undergraduate studies. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during WWII as Pharmacist’s Mate 1st Class in the South Pacific. Alfred married Louise Gage on June 18, 1947, in Cedar Rapids. After completing his service with the Navy, Alfred earned his Medical Degree from the University of Iowa in 1951. He was a Family Practitioner serving communities in the Central City area for 33 years and a Deputy Medical Examiner for 36 years. Alfred served as Attending Physician for the Linn County Home from 1959 to 1984. He was a member of the American Medical Association and Iowa Medical Society.

Alfred participated in the Kiwanis and helped start the annual 4th of July fireworks in Central City. He was a member of AmVets Post #37. During his leisure hours, he enjoyed walking and gardening.
