Alberta Maxine Hammond was born to Harry and Elsie Hammond on September 3, 1922, in Linn County, Iowa. She was born shortly after her twin sister, Alice. She married Burton J. Cray on February 8, 1942. They were married for 55 years.
Alberta was employed by Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. (Alliant Energy), where she worked until her retirement. Alberta was active in PTA, Cubs and Boy Scouts of America. Alberta was a charter member of the Linn County Historical Society (The History Center) and a member of the Cedar Valley Rocks and Mineral Society and very active in both until 2012. She was a faithful and active member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
Alberta had a great love of local history and contributed much information to the History Center. She had a gift for writing and recorded much of her own family’s history, wrote stories and had one story published in a book entitled The Dirt Thirties. She equally enjoyed going rock hunting, particularly for fossils, with her husband, Bud. She also loved to travel whether it was day trips to see friends, long trips to see David and Gary, or to see wildlife, historical sites and the natural wonders of America. Alberta made her last solo trip to Colorado Springs in her 80’s. She loved animals, especially cats and dogs.
Alberta will be missed by her family and her many friends.
Her family wishes to thank Hospice of St. Luke’s and the staff of Woodlands at Methwick for their care, kindness and support.
Memorials may be directed to the History Center or Camp Courageous.
