Agnes L. Mensen, 91, of Earlville, Iowa, passed away Monday, January 28, 2019, at Marietta’s Place, Manchester, Iowa, with family by her side. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 2, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earlville, Iowa, with burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Earlville. Visitation: 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2019, at Clifton – Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville with a 2:30 p.m. Scripture Service, and additional visitation from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday.
Agnes was born December 1, 1927, at the Petersburg Spur, the daughter of Bernard “Ben” and Louise E. (Kerkhoff) Mormann. She attended St. Peter and Paul School in Petersburg. On November 19, 1946, Agnes was united in marriage to Melvin R. Mensen at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Four children were born to this union. Agnes and Melvin farmed for many years before moving into Earlville in 1974. Agnes started working at the Good Neighbor Home in dietary/dining room and eventually became head cook. She worked as a prep cook at the Country Junction from September 1991 until September 2015.
Agnes was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earlville. She enjoyed playing Yahtzee, doing word search puzzles, road trips and an occasional trip to the Casino. Agnes was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
Agnes is survived by her four children, Linda Kerper of Greeley, Lyle (Linda) Mensen of Earlville, Steve Mensen (Anita Kafer) of Florida and Mike (Sandy) Mensen of Delhi. She is survived by fourteen grandchildren, Dawn (Dan) Moorman, Sara (Dustin) Thome, Mark Mensen, Jeff (Amy) Mensen, Travis (Meghan) Mensen, Peter (Missy) Mensen, Heather (Richard) Aden, Brian (Leah) Mensen, Scott (Andrea) Mensen, Ashley (Chris) Larkin, Troy Mensen, Jordan Mensen (BrieAnna Nielson), Megan Mensen (Rob Bockenstedt) and Brianna Mensen. Agnes also has nineteen great-grandchildren: Kara (Mark Gelwicks) and Ben Moorman; Hannah, Audrey and Morgan Thome; Nolan, Natalie and Nora Mensen; Matthew, Nicholas, Erin and Jenelle Mensen; Merrick and Wyatt Mensen; William and Bo Aden; Libby and Cyrus Mensen; and Elodie Larkin. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Abbie Mormann and Jean Mensen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin, in 2006; a son-in-law, Jim Kerper; her brothers, LuVerne (Catherine) Mormann, Arthur Mormann and Walter (Jean) Mormann; and a sister, Evelyn (Elmer) Geistkemper.
