Adolph G. "J.R.? Hanson Jr., 78, of 705 Gateway St. NE, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, December 19, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2004, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Donald Klein, with military honors. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 22) at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a vigil service will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Janice; five children, Mary Solyntjes, Bob (Cyd) Hanson, Tom Hanson, Jim Hanson and Sally (Paul) Benda, all of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Traci, Josh, Justin, Matt, David and Sommer; a sister, Marge Patton of Evansville, Indiana; and a brother, Harry Hanson of Elkader.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Irma Hanson, who died in infancy, Edna Olson, Lola Elvers and Lucille Berse; and two brothers, Leo and Aden Hanson.
Born on September 5, 1926, in Elgin, Iowa, he was the son of Adolph G. Hanson Sr. and Lydia (Christian) Hanson. On July 25, 1953, he was united in marriage to Janice Dougherty in Elkader. J.R. served with the U.S. Army during the end of World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a production worker at Wilson?s Meats (Farmstead) for thirty-six years, retiring in 1988. J.R. was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church; American Legion Post 298, Marion, VFW Post 788, Cedar Rapids; and UFCW P-3 Retirees.
J.R. was an avid Cubs, Packer and Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed fishing and bowling and had served as secretary of leagues in the Cedar Rapids area. He worked part-time as a bartender for nearly forty years at Jubilee Lanes and also at the VFW post.
J.R. was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in J.R.?s memory.
Military honors will be provided at the church by VFW Post 788.
