Adella M. Shay, of 5117 E Avenue N.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away in the evening of Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at the age of 93 years, 11 months and 8 days, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 3:00 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m., Friday at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial: Linwood Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her long time companion, Neil McGee; her children, M. Gene (Shirley) of Oelwein, Larry (Marge) of Hiawatha, Karen (Kyle) Reynolds, Jim Shay and significant other Debbie Benson all of Cedar Rapids; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence; two sons, Joseph and Lee; her parents; and all of her siblings.
Born in Fairbanks, Iowa, on February 12, 1915, she was youngest of the 13 children of Fred and Elizabeth Reinke. She was a 1933 graduate of Maynard, Iowa high school. On June 2, 1934, she was united in marriage to Clarence Shay. He died September 10, 1974. A resident of Cedar Rapids since 1958, Adella was employed by the Me Too and the Gazette.
Adella was a member of Holy Redeemer Christian Church. She loved to travel, fish and camp and play various card games. Other joys were quilting, crocheting, watching Iowa sports and professional sports on television, watching The Hour of Power on Sundays and spending time with friends and family.
