Abe Hamed, 87, of 2250 1st Avenue, died Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at Winslow House Care Center in Marion, following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 27, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center by Rev. Bob Kunz. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Lavonna "Bonnie? of Marion; his children, Sam Hamed and wife Diane of Ocean Park, Washington, Carolyn Brunssen and husband Sherman of Santa Maria, California, Richard Hamed and wife Margaret of Cedar Rapids, Sherry Krutzfield and husband Butch of Cedar Rapids and Donn Hamed and wife Jane of Backus, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren, Michael, Brian, John, Susan, Wade, Kristie, Kelly, Carlie, Haley, Vince and Marty; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are four sisters, Fatima Igram of Cedar Rapids, Della Petersen of Olin, Amy Semelroth of Cedar Rapids and Doris Hamad of Southbury, Connecticut; and a brother, Bob Hamed of Cleveland, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Emmitt Hamed; and a sister, Lila Omar.
Abe was born September 5, 1917, the son of Sam and Scherrife (Jabara) Hamed in Arlington, Iowa. On October 29, 1947, he married Lavonna Starry in Olin. Abe served with the Army Air Force during World War II. Abe owned and operated a bar and restaurant for five years in Olin. He worked at Clinton Engines in Maquoketa and then at Rockwell Collins as a machinist for 21 years before retiring in 1979. Abe was a member of Islamic Mosque, a 50 year member of Olin Legion Post No. 412, a past member of the Olin Fire Department and Knights of Pythais.
