Walter C. “Walt” Beary, 81, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, May 29, 2022. Visitation: 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with sharing time to begin at 7:30 p.m. led by Jim Coyle. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2022, at St. Jude Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Inurnment with military honors: St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Walt was born October 14, 1940, in Lovilia, Iowa, the son of Walter and Mary (Hackathorn) Beary. He graduated from Lovilia High School. Walt served in the United States Air Force from 1959-63. He was united in marriage to Georgina L. Seibert on September 17, 1960. Walt worked for FMC, Linkbelt Speeder, and Goss Manufacturing. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and served as the Sweet Corn Festival Chairperson in 1997. Walt was also involved with the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 0572, and Easy Listening with Walt and Kit.
Walt endlessly enjoyed the outdoors; you could find him biking, camping, doing karate, boating, waterskiing, snow skiing, or hunting with his sons and grandsons. He was incredibly active and entered many races including the Bix 7, Chicago Marathon, Pigman Triathlon, and he biked Ragbrai for 24 years. Walt had many hobbies and was a lifelong learner. He taught himself to play instruments such as the guitar, banjo, piano, and harmonica. Walt will be remembered as a kind and helpful man with a big smile and a twinkle in his eye. He made others feel loved and included. Walt will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his wife, Georgina Beary of Cedar Rapids; children, Terri (Jim) Rhoads, Cindy (Tom) Brown, Jeff (Gayle) Beary, Steve (Stephanie) Beary, all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Ryan, Dylan, Lucas, Brody, Joseph, Ben, Isaac, Olivia, Dan, Sarah, Laura, Julie, Jennifer, Janelle, and Travis; great-grandchildren, Rayden, Lucian, Willow, Abrum, Kaya, Jude, Robby, Wyatt, Aiden, Jackson, and Aurora; brother, Larry Beary; and sisters, Joyce Koffman, and Helen Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Beary; brother, Jerome Beary; sisters, Pauline Claman and Loretta Corso; and granddaughter, Elisa Brown.
