Robert “Bob” Joseph O’Connell, 51, of Delhi, died at his home, surrounded by his family, Sunday, June 14, 2015. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2015, at St. John Parish, Delhi. Family will greet friends from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 18, 2015, with a 3:00 p.m. Scripture Service, at Clifton Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, and one hour prior to Mass at the church. Burial will be at St. John Catholic Cemetery, Delhi.
Bob is survived by his wife, Lynne; sons, Brad (fiancée Jamie) O’Connell of Aplington, and Alex O’Connell of Delhi, his mother, Margaret O’Connell; brother, Frank (Carol) O’Connell of Delhi; sisters, Sandy (Marvin) Kelchen of Monticello, and Janice O’Connell of Portland, Oregon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Francis; brother, Kenneth; sister, Margaret, in infancy, brother-in-law, Mark Heims, and his dog, Patches.
Bob was born October 12, 1963, in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Francis and Margaret (Russ) O’Connell. He was a 1982 graduate of Maquoketa Valley High School, and Northeast Iowa Community College in diesel mechanics. Bob married Lynne Marie Heims on June 7, 1986, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Manchester. Bob drove truck for O’Connell Transport, Preussner Truck Line, and RA-LY Transport, and owned and operated “The Woodshop” where he was a skilled craftsman. He finished his career as maintenance supervisor with the City of Delhi. Bob was very hardworking. He loved his wife and children, and especially enjoyed attending their activities. He coached Little League, was a volunteer fireman for many years, a lifelong member of St. John Parish, and chairman of Delhi Elementary Playground Committee. Bob also fundraised and donated his talents to build the Delhi Baseball, Softball, and Little League Complex.
