Rita Marie Urbanek, 97, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at her home. In agreement with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Funeral Liturgy Outside of Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. Deacon Jeff Volker will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Following the inurnment, a celebration of Rita’s life will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, at the Marion American Legion Post #298, located at 625 31st Street in Marion.
Rita was born on August 3, 1925, in Seattle, Washington, the daughter of Elton and Edna (Seeks) Remington. She grew up in Linn County, Iowa, and graduated from Marion High School. Rita was united in marriage to John C. Urbanek in 1946. To this union two children were born, Christine and Ed. Rita and John divorced in 1958. Rita was formerly employed at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids for 28 years. She loved cooking, dancing, crafting, playing cards, and traveling. Rita was a stubborn woman, a wonderful mother and a loving grandmother, and was passionate about her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Rita is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Christine (Rod) Thompson of Marion, Iowa; son, Ed (Judi) Urbanek of North Fort Myers, Florida; three grandchildren, Nikki Meister, Lisa (James) McManis, and Tom (Sara) Urbanek; and known as “GG” to her four great-grandchildren, Hayden and Nathan Meister, and Courtney and Emily Urbanek. She is also survived by a host of extended family members including Jim Marsh’s family, and many nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elton and Edna Remington; brother, Elton Remington, Jr.; sister, Barbara Baker; two nephews, Michael Baker and Matt Remington; and her special friend of 30 years, Jim Marsh.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Rita’s memory may be made to the family and will be donated to various foundations that were instrumental in assisting in Rita’s medical needs the past several years.
