Richard "Dick? Carroll, 71, of Marion, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2006, in Mesa, Arizona, after a sudden illness. The family will greet friends from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 13) at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, where a rosary will be recited beginning at 6:10 p.m. and a parish vigil service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Thursday, December 14, 2006, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his beloved wife of more than fifty-three years, Dorothy "Dottie? Carroll; a sister, Pat Carroll of San Diego, California; a daughter, Deb (David) Partridge of Mechanicsville, Virginia; sons, Rick (Susan) Carroll, Chris (Dora) Carroll, both of Marion, and Mike (Joni) Carroll of Altus, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Rose Mary Briggs.
Dick was born June 11, 1935, in Colfax, Iowa, the son of John Walter Carroll and Mary Belle (Fisher) Carroll. He graduated from Dowling High School in Des Moines in June 1953, received his Master?s Degree in June 1962 from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and his PhD from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in July 1973. Dick was employed at Collins Radio for twenty-nine years as an electrical engineer.
Dick was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Richards on August 1, 1953, at All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines.
Dick was a lover of music and an accomplished organist, and derived particular joy from praising God through the playing of the organ at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Dick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a kind, gentle and humble man with a quick, infectious laugh who touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
