Norman R. Finger, 83, of Manchester, died Monday, July 13, 2009, of cancer at his home surrounded by family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester by Rev. Jean Rabary. Family will greet friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester. Friends may also call one hour before services at the church on Thursday. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Hill Crest Cemetery in Volga.

Norman was born April 10, 1926 in Seventy-Six, Missouri, the son of Hugo and Bertha (Hein) Finger. He attended Lutheran school before graduating in 1944 from the Perryville High School, Perryville, MO. Norman served with the U.S. Army from August 1944 thru July 1946 during WWII. He served in the Rainbow Division in Rhineland Central Germany and received the Purple Heart. Following discharge, Norman returned to Missouri to help on the family farm. On May 6, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mary Allman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Norman was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier and worked part-time at the AMVETS and Electric Park, all in Waterloo. Norman retired in 1982 and the couple moved to their home on the Maquoketa River in 1985.

Norman was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Manchester, the American Legion and the AMVETS. The couple wintered at the Sleepy Valley Ranch in Mission, Texas. He enjoyed gardening, camping and fishing. Norman was always willing to take care of the stray kitties in the area.

Norman is survived by his wife, Mary Finger of Manchester; three children, David (Ann) Finger of Ankeny, Cindy Hay (fiancé Frank Eisermann) of Manchester, and Gail Finger of Waterloo; five grandchildren; one great-grandson, three siblings, Clayborne (Millie) Finger of ND; Vera Randall of Maquoketa, and Delores McFadd of DE; a sister-in-law, Berneice Finger of MN, and Ima Finger of AZ.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Bertha Finger, his step-mother, Caroline Finger; siblings, Arlen Finger, Karl (Marjorie) Finger, Otto (Margaret) Finger, Lawrence (Ann) Finger, and Freida (Bill) Greenwald.
