Melvin F. Henderson, 86, Central City, passed away December 9, 2104, of cancer. Memorial Service: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014, at the Howard Cherry Boy Scout Reservation Camp Wakonda, Waubeek, Iowa. Visitation and Celebration of Life to be held at 11:00 a.m. in the dining hall.

Melvin was born November 9, 1928, to his parents Clifford and Hazel (Smola) Henderson. He married Carol Henderson December 20, 1947, in Coggon, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carol; daughter Colleen, sons Nyle (Susan), Mark (Liz); eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; two brothers, Clifford and Laverne (Celia). Mel was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Gladys Vasek, Verda Sweet and Charlotte Wilson; and one brother, Emery Henderson.

Mel lived his entire life farming and ranching in rural Central City. He and Carol enjoyed their many trail rides and horse events throughout the West and Midwest. He used his horses as an integral part of his cattle operation. He was an active participant with the Boy Scout Camp, Farm Bureau, Linn County 4-H and the Linn County Cattlemen.

Memorials in Mel’s name may be directed to Camp Courageous, St. Luke’s Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.
