Mary Jane Stanard, 67, of 4400 Lorcardo Drive N.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday, August 04, 2008, in Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, of lung cancer. Services: 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 7, 2008, at New Covenant Bible Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. James Wartian. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Center Point Cemetery, Center Point.
Survivors include her husband, Mel; son, Daniel (Mary) Stanard of Seattle, Washington; daughter, Susan (Frank) Gurnick of Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Stella, Joshua and Samuel; and two sisters, Dixie (Laurence) Reed of Swisher and Wendy (Dave) Kall of New Port Richey, Florida.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents.
Mary Jane was born December 21, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Wendell and Wiltrude (Cook) Newman. She grew up in Center Point, Iowa, and graduated from the Center Point High School in 1958. She attended the University of Northern Iowa for nearly two years. She married Mel Stanard on April 15, 1960, in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. She and Mel lived in Michigan for twenty years before returning to the Cedar Rapids area in 1994. Mary Jane’s faith and church life were very important to her. She was an active member of New Covenant Bible Church in Cedar Rapids, where she started the Cancer Encouragement Group and was a member of the Pathfinders Adult Bible Fellowship. During her time in Michigan she was instrumental in the implementation of the Stephens Ministry program at her church. She was also a past volunteer with the Aid to Women Treasures store in Cedar Rapids.
