Mark C. Decker, 48, of Central City, Iowa, passed away tragically on October 20, 2018 of a heart attack. A Celebration of Life will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Marion. The family plans to say a few words at noon, but in keeping with Mark’s tradition, remarks will probably be made at 12:20. Military honors will conclude the celebration at 12:45 p.m. A reception will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post #298, 625 31st Street, Marion, to watch the Iowa Hawkeye football game. The family encourages everyone to dress casual for the celebration.
Mark was born in Monticello, Iowa on August 10, 1970. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1989. Mark served in the United States Air Force in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm as a construction equipment operator and was a member of the American Legion Post #421 of Central City, Iowa. Mark married Shelly Gabeline on August 26, 2000, in Marion, and they are the proud parents of Amber Lynn Decker, 20, and Brett Marcus Decker, 10.
Mark worked as a professional semi-truck driver for Spartan Nash for 18 years. He enjoyed cooking, restoring old automobiles, NASCAR, Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games and the Green Bay Packers and Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. But what he loved the most was rooting his children on at their track and field, swimming and tennis events.
He was a loving, devoted husband, father and friend who would do anything for anyone even though he was always a bit late for events. And the man loved his chocolate which he would hide all over the house.
Mark is survived by his wife, Shelly; children, Amber and Brett; his parents, Vickie Decker (George Herring) and Douglas (Angela) Decker; his brother, Brian and his spouse Stacey and their four children; his sister, Trisha and her spouse E.J. Brink and their three children; lots of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
