Louis William Pernicka, 83, of 2426 Linwood Street SW, Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, August 8, 2008, in his home, following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Wendell Beets. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Shirley; his children, Larry (Mary Taylor) Pernicka of Cedar Rapids, Sandra (Larry) Serbousek of Conroy, Louis A. “Duke” (Susana) Pernicka, Kimberly (Kevin) Dobbins, Michelle Pernicka and grandson, Andre Sallis, who was raised by Louis and Shirley, all of Cedar Rapids; a son-in-law, Ozie Eggelton of Cedar Rapids; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gene (Barb) Pernicka of Cedar Rapids; and his special pets, Chichi, Sammie and Higley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Lou Eggelton; three brothers, Frank, Milo and Fred; two sisters, Bernice Taylor and Agnes Leeper; and two grandchildren, Larry Pernicka, Jr. and Cameron Schulte.
Louis was born December 5, 1924, the son of Jacob and Christie (Shramek) Pernicka, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Louis served with the 104th Infantry Division “Timberwolves” at the Battle of the Bulge. On June 19, 1948, Louis was united in marriage to Shirley Batten at the Kenwood Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. For 40 years, he worked for the City of Cedar Rapids, retiring as foreman of the street department.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Louis.
Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Hanford Post 5.
