Leonard Hartl

Leonard Joseph Hartl, 92, of Alburnett, Iowa, died Monday, December 17, 2018 at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. A Rosary service will begin at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2018, where visitation will follow from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hiawatha, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to service. Burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Leonard was born July 4, 1926 in Ely, Iowa to Frank and Lottie (Bednashek) Hartl. He was united in marriage to Betty Buchtela on November 19, 1947, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
He farmed for 30 years and later owned and operated Hartl Plumbing & Electric. Leonard worked as the evening custodian for Alburnett School District and also worked for Mooney Heating & Cooling. Leonard was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church for 30 years. He was also a member of the Lions Club and sat on the Board of the Springville Telephone Company.
Leonard loved polka music and dancing every week with his wife Betty for about 50 years. Leonard never met a stranger. He was a great story teller. Leonard enjoyed a good game of Pinochle and he treasured spending time with his beloved family.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty Hartl, of Alburnett; five children: Ruth (Rick) Pierce of Hiawatha; Donna Hanley of Bryant, Arkansas; Carol Sauer of Marion; Paul (Kathy) Hartl of Central City; and Nancy (Randy) McGovern of Anamosa; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister Helen Swenka of Hills.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence and Frank Hartl; and sister, Julia Hromidko.
