Leo F. Smith, 79, a resident of Winslow House Care Center, Marion, formerly of Central City, died at the care center Wednesday, October 28, 2009, after an extended illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2009, at First United Methodist Church in Central City, by Rev. Nick Needham. The family will greet friends 4-8 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City. Burial: South Boulder Cemetery, rural Central City, military rites provided by American Legion Wapsi Post #421.

Survivors include his wife, Natalie; son Randy (Renee) Smith of Anamosa; daughters, Jeanne Smith of Cedar Rapids, and Julie (Patrick) Novak of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Angie Kremer, Teresa Diers, Jacquelyn Eden, Michelle Cruise, Mitchell Lerch, Emily Novak, and Sarah Novak; and seven great-grandchildren, Gracie, Kylee, Troy, Kadin, Revee, Trevin, and Tyler. Also surviving are his sister, Mildred Wagner; brother, John Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and Harlan Smith.

Leo was born November 23, 1929, near Central City to Ralph and Bertha (Rich) Smith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, having served during the Korean Conflict. Leo married Natalie J. Hoerner at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on November 14, 1952. He worked for Cedar Rapids Inc. as a serviceman and was a farmer in the Central City area. Leo was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Central City, American Legion Wapsi Post #421, and Amvet Post #37.

A memorial fund has been established in Leo’s name.
