John J. Marlin, Jr., 69, of Marion, died Friday, August 27, 2010, at his home, after a long battle with cancer. Memorial Mass: 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 30, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Marion, Iowa, by Father Rod Allers. The family will greet friends from 4 – 8 p.m., Sunday, August 29, 2010, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with a wake beginning at 7:00 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Military rites provided by American Legion Post #298, Marion.

Survivors include his wife, Monika; 2 daughters from a previous marriage, Christina (Randy) Meeker of Madrid, Iowa, and Jo Ann Marlin (Sid Jones) of Des Moines; a step-son, William Allen Jacobs II of Cedar Rapids; brothers Francis (Carol) Marlin of Keokuk, Iowa, Mike (Nan) Marlin of Cedar Rapids, William (Sala) Marlin of Keokuk; sisters, Kathleen Church of Florida and Therese (Ed) Wheatley of Columbia, Missouri; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and his special dog, Lucy. John and Monika were sponsors for a child from India through Father John McClean’s association with CFCA. John enjoyed his family; boating on the Mississippi, and retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law; father-in-law; a sister, Rose Marie Dinkleman; a brother, Robert Marlin; and a brother-in-law, Roger Church.

John was born September 10, 1940, the son of John J., Sr., and Dorothy E. (Summers) Marlin Dawkins, in Keokuk, Iowa. He graduated in 1959 from Cardinal Stritch High School in Keokuk, Iowa and was in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962. John married Sigrid Monika (Maag) Jacobs on July 19, 1997, in Marion, Iowa. John worked as a realtor in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Marion from 1977 to 2010. In 1997 he started his own brokerage company, Marlin Realty Consultants. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors, the Iowa Association of Realtors, and many other Realty Associations; a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #298 in Marion, Iowa, and the Knights of Columbus in Marion #5390.

The family would like to thank all of the help they received from Mercy Hospice of Cedar Rapids (Tracy, Tammy and Christina) and Dr. Marc Wilkinson of Marion.
