John H. Hackbarth, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Philip Thompson. The family will greet friends 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2012 at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion, where a Rosary and parish vigil service will be held at 4:00 p.m. The family will also greet friends one hour prior to Mass at the church on Saturday. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his two daughters, Connie (Mike) Cornelius of Zearing, and Donna (Phil) Bisenius of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Mike (Nadine) Hackbarth of Cedar Rapids, and Dan (Joan) Hackbarth of Marion; daughter-in-law, Pam (Bob Andrlik) Hackbarth of Bertram; 16 grandchildren, Julie, Linda, Scott, Christopher, Jeff, Kim, Sarah, John, Tim, Katie, Elizabeth, Meghan, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Andrew, and Michael; 9 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Hackbarth of Dubuque; and two sister-in-laws, Vi Hackbarth of Manchester, and Germaine Streng of Cascade. Also surviving are many loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter, Joan; one son, Tom; one brother, Art Jr.; one granddaughter, Rebecca; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.

John was born March 4, 1926 in Earlville, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Gertrude (Hunt) Hackbarth. He graduated from Earlville High School in 1943. John was a WWII veteran with the United States Navy, having served from 1943 to 1946. He married Viola Ludwig on May 22, 1950 in Dyersville. Viola died June 14, 1999. John was employed as a finish carpenter with Zobac Construction Company for 37 years. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local Union #308, and a Charter Member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

John was a man of many interests, but especially enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tending his fruit orchard, and fishing. He took great pride in being a good neighbor, but his greatest love was the time he spent with his family. He touched many lives in many different ways and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
