Jacob R. Giles, 15, of 760 West Main Street, Robins, died Friday, January 12, 2007, at University Hospital, Iowa City, from injuries suffered in an auto accident. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at St. Pius X Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Neil Manternach. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Hiawatha, where a vigil service will begin at 6:00 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his parents, Kevin and Jeanne Giles; two brothers, Josh and K.J.; and his grandmother, Viola Harken of Ackley, Iowa.
Also surviving are his aunts and uncles, Patricia (Harken) and Bruce Cunyus of Texas, Sue Giles, of Wisconsin, Nadeen and Greg Olson of Alaska, Paula Giles of Missouri, David and Chris Giles of Wisconsin, Steve and Louise Maddux of Tennessee, Tom and Doreen Giles, Rosemary and Al Towle, Suzanne Giles, all of Wisconsin, Perry Giles and Dan and Patricia Giles, all of Minnesota; and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert Harken and Claude and Norma Giles; four uncles and an aunt, Bernie Giles, Patrick Giles, Greg Giles and Raymond and Carol Giles; and a cousin, Mark Olson.
Jake was born November 5, 1991, the son of Kevin and Jeanne (Harken) Giles in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A freshman at Xavier High School, he participated on the freshman basketball team, the Spanish Club and the Key Club. Jake was an outdoorsman who loved trapshooting, fishing, as he caught his first musky in 2006, hunting, as he shot his first deer in 2006, and camping. He was in the Venture Crew 2000 Club preparing for a skiing trip to Colorado and a backpacking trip to Alaska. He was also taking confirmation classes at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Jake enjoyed reading, skiing, paintball, playing cards and board games and umpiring youth baseball. He also enjoyed playing online gaming which included X-Box 360.
An avid Packer and Hawkeye fan, Jake enjoyed attending the Packer games, attending his first game at the age of 10 months. He also enjoyed attending numerous other sporting events. Jake loved his travels with his family, especially to Hawaii, Cancun, and the family cabin in northern Wisconsin. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his brothers and friends.
Jacob was an organ donor for the Iowa Donor Network. His family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa Donor Network, 550 Madison Ave., North Liberty, IA 52317, in memory of Jacob R. Giles.
A luncheon will be served at Xavier High School following the services.
