George L. Mayfield, 82, of 632 20th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday, June 11, 2007, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Ed Powers. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 15, 2007, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; sons, Bruce (Dorothy) Mayfield of Kenmore, New York and Chris (Debra) Mayfield of Marion, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Stephanie) Mayfield of Zephyre Hills, Florida; and a sister, Marilyn (Roger) Walker of Dewey, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Steven Mayfield.
George was born May 5, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Andrew and L. Helen (Moore) Mayfield. He served for 6 years in the U.S. Navy during WWII. On June 30, 1947, he married Betty Hansen in Cedar Rapids. George was a police officer for the Cedar Rapids Police Department for 25 years retiring in 1980. Then for ten years he was a custodian in the Cedar Rapids Schools retiring in 1990 from Jefferson High School.
George was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, the Iowa State Police Department Association, Cedar Rapids Police Protective Association, Iowa Chief’s of Police Association and the American Legion Hanford Post #5.
A memorial fund has been established in George’s memory.
