The Rev. George W. Bishop died at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion, IA, on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the age of 88. Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Marion on Monday, April 6, 2015, with the Rev. Dr. Howard Chapman officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion.

George was born to Clarence and Beulah (Rost) Bishop in Montgomery County, IA on February 22, 1927. He graduated from Emerson High School, the University of Dubuque, and earned his Master of Divinity Degree from Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1952. Also in 1952, he married Shirley Smith in Galena, IL. He was a member of East Iowa Presbytery, and served the church-at-large in various capacities, including Moderator of the six-state Synod of Lakes and Prairies. He served churches in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa, retiring in 1992. During his retirement years, he filled the pulpits of many area churches, including several interim positions.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley; son, Alan (fiancée Marlo) Bishop of Rock Island, IL; daughter, Julie (Jim) Tevis of Marion; grandson, Ian (Jill) Bishop of Rock Island; granddaughter, Leah Tevis of New Orleans, LA; grandsons, Dustin Tevis of Columbus, OH, Collin Tevis of Davenport, and Brennen Tevis of Marion; great-grandsons, Samuel and Connor Bishop of Rock Island; plus several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Janet (Dean) Martensen of Marion; and brother-in-law, David Smith of Galena, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Marlin and Earl (Geraldine) Bishop; and a sister, Doris (Lewis) Conrad.
