Frederick J. Zimmerman, 96, of Manchester, formerly of Ryan, died Sunday morning, January 7, 2007 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a short illness.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm Thursday at Golden Congregational United Church of Christ, rural Ryan, with Pastor Mona Burns and Rev. Kurt Pasko officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Wednesday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester and one hour before services Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Fred was born August 26, 1910 on the family farm near Ryan, the son of Fred J. and Elsie (Aldrich) Zimmerman. He rode his horse to the one-room school he attended, north of the Golden Church. On December 21, 1940 Fred was united in marriage to Lucille E. Wilson in Manchester. Fred worked road construction and farmed with a team of horses. Fred and Lucille farmed east of Ryan from 1940-1973, when they moved to Monticello. The couple moved into The Meadows in Manchester in 2000. Lucille died July 17, 2001.

Fred was a lifetime member of Golden Congregational United Church of Christ. He belonged to the Farm Bureau and served as a Hazel Green Township trustee, Ryan Creamery board member and Golden Cemetery trustee. He enjoyed being with his family, meeting people, horses, rodeos, carving, reading and attending the Iowa State Fair and Waterloo Cattle Congress.

Fred is survived by three children, Tom (Lola) Zimmerman of West Des Moines, Vicki (Rodger) Rozendaal of Newcastle, WA and Nancy (Brian) Thomas of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother Donald (Helen) Zimmerman of Hopkinton; and two sisters, Una Voelker and Norma (Eddie) Lewis, both of Manchester.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Zimmerman; his parents, Fred & Elsie Zimmerman; three siblings, Carroll Zimmerman, Doris Zimmerman and an infant brother; and a brother-in-law, Carrol Voelker.
